Standing a little over three feet tall and designed with realistic details, your little one will love Melissa & Doug’s stuffed penguin.

The Power of Penguins

Despite how popular penguins are, most people don’t know a whole lot about them. For example, were you aware that there are only 18 species of penguin in the whole world?

Oftentimes, there are hundreds of species of birds. There are, for instance, over 300 species of hummingbirds, over 340 species of doves, 175 species of pigeons and 250 species of owls! For penguins, though, there are only 18.

Of these 18 species, all but one of them are found exclusively in the Southern Hemisphere. The 18th species, the Galapagos penguin, is found only on the Galapagos Islands, which actually straddles the equator, meaning that some of the island’s penguins can sometimes be found north of that dividing line, although most scientists still classify them as living “in the Southern Hemisphere” as well.

Another thing that many people don’t know about penguins is that they aren’t all black and white. While it’s true that the vast majority of penguins are monochromatic in color, there’s one species called the Little penguin that’s actually blue and white, although some of them tend more towards gray than blue. These are also the smallest penguins in the world, standing at only about a foot tall.

The most well-known penguins are Emperor penguins; they’re the “typical” penguins people picture when they think of penguins. (They were also one of the penguin species in the movie Happy Feet, along with the Adelie penguin and the Rockhopper penguin, which further contributed to their popularity.) They’re also the largest species of penguins. There is, however, a now-extinct penguin known as the Mega-penguin. It lived about 40 million years ago and stood about 5’3″ tall on average. Due to the bones they’ve found, scientists believe the Mega-penguin could stretch to heights of 6’7″. They probably weighed about 250 pounds.

When penguins are swimming, most can swim between four and seven miles per hour. The fastest swimmers, though, are the Gentoo penguins. They can swim at speeds of up to 22 miles per hour. Most penguins spend about half their lives on land and the other half in the water, but there are a few species that spend up to three-quarters of their lives in the water. Because they have few natural predators on land, most penguins don’t really fear humans, so if you go to visit them in their natural habitat, don’t be surprised if one comes right up to you to investigate.

If one does come up to you, don’t be alarmed if it opens its mouth and terrifies you with what’s inside. Like all birds, penguins don’t have teeth. What they do have, though, looks pretty weird and scary. Their tongues and the roofs of their mouths are covered in backward-facing spines made of flesh. They look absolutely horrifying, but their only use is to help guide their food down into their throats.

Conclusion

So, now that you know a lot more about penguins than you did this morning, check out the gift list and find the perfect gift for your favorite penguin-loving friend. Then you can wow her (or him) with not only the perfect present but also with your exciting knowledge of this amazing animal.
